Many people suffer from a feeling of anxiety, guilt, unworthiness and constant fatigue. All these signs indicate depression, a mood disorder. Depression is a stage of extreme dejection or feeling of inadequacy and hopelessness. It is often characterized by certain physical symptoms. There are various types of depression such as atypical depression, major depression, dysthymia, postpartum depression and seasonal affective disorder. People suffering from depression find it difficult to perform the daily activities and lose their interest in life. A prolonged illness, failure to achieve success, lack of optimism, poor family relations and unforgettable tragic incident such as the death of a beloved are the main causes of depression. People facing a financial strain, loneliness, health problems or chronic pain, alcohol or drug abuse, relationship problems, early childhood trauma or abuse and family history of depression are at higher risk for depression. People with depression lose their balance, stay extremely dull and upset as well as constantly feel exhausted. They may also experience restlessness, unwillingness to eat and trouble sleeping. They may become violent or start crying over minor issues. They often tend to avoid communicating with others and participating in social events. A standard treatment for depression involves a combination of different therapies and antidepressant medications. Various therapies such as psychotherapy or talk therapy, light therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy and Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy are effective in relieving the symptoms of depression. Depression counseling is one of the effective ways to overcome the symptoms of depression.
